Daniel Blumstein, a researcher facing funding challenges for his yellow-bellied marmot study, found inspiration from the Apple TV comedy series “Margo’s Got Money Troubles.” Observing the financial struggles depicted in the show, he proposed the idea of sharing humorous videos of marmots from his lab on the subscription-based platform OnlyFans to solicit support. Collaborating with a graduate student, they launched an OnlyFans account named “OnlyMarms.”
Despite OnlyFans’ reputation for explicit content, Blumstein emphasized that OnlyMarms is a family-friendly initiative, showcasing amusing images of marmots twice a week since June. The project aims to engage the public, including plans for a “Fat Marmot Week” event starting on August 24, potentially in partnership with Vancouver Island Marmots.
Blumstein’s lab focuses on studying yellow-bellied marmots to understand aging and responses to climate change. With a research history dating back to 1962, the project ranks as the second-longest study of wild mammals with individually identifiable traits. The research investigates how hibernating marmots exhibit longevity and explores epigenetic influences on aging processes.
In promoting body positivity among marmots, Blumstein highlighted the necessity for these animals to gain weight for survival. Despite facing funding rejections pre-dating the Trump administration’s cutbacks, Blumstein’s persistence in securing grants and collaborations has sustained the marmot study. OnlyMarms has raised around $3,000 since its launch, yet significant funding gaps remain, urging supporters to donate directly to UCLA to support the research project.
