Maïa Schwinghammer embarked on her Olympic journey not on a mountain but behind a snowmobile, gliding across Christopher Lake in Saskatchewan. “I grew up in Saskatoon,” she mentioned. “My parents managed the local hill, Mount Blackstrap, where I honed my skiing skills.”
Though Blackstrap was modest, it served as a vital foundation for Schwinghammer. “It was where I learned to ski and developed the basic skills that led me to where I am today,” she explained.
Schwinghammer’s father, Rick, played a significant role in her life and passion for freestyle skiing, shaping her early exposure to the sport. Living in Saskatchewan’s flat terrain meant ski trips became a regular part of her life, with weekends spent driving to various ski destinations.
“My first Olympics in the bib will be Milano-Cortina, but it won’t be my first Olympic experience,” Schwinghammer stated. “Watching the 2010 Olympics was an ‘aha’ moment for me. I was only eight, but it left a lasting impact. I aspired to become an Olympian.”
Transitioning to skiing with elite athletes in Whistler was a defining moment for Schwinghammer. Despite initial doubts from others, she persisted and made it onto the provincial team at 15, progressing to the national team two years later.
Her skiing journey took her worldwide to destinations like Chile, France, and various World Cup events. However, challenges arose, including setbacks at the 2019 World Championships and the loss of a close teammate in 2020. Despite narrowly missing qualification for the Beijing Olympics in 2022, Schwinghammer remained determined.
The setback in 2022 fueled her motivation, leading to her first World Cup victory on home soil, securing her spot at the 2026 Olympics. Currently in Milano-Cortina, Schwinghammer expressed her lifelong dedication to this moment and her determination to give her best performance.
Her father, Rick, has been a constant support throughout her journey, from those early days on the Saskatchewan lake to witnessing her compete against the world’s best. “I always tell Maïa to have fun from start to finish. Regardless of the outcome, we’ve already achieved success,” Rick shared.
