Prince Edward Island has successfully decreased its greenhouse gas emissions for three consecutive years, with a focus on addressing transportation challenges as it moves towards achieving net-zero emissions by 2040. Gilles Arsenault, the Minister of Environment, Energy, and Climate Action in P.E.I., emphasized the need to tackle transportation emissions, stating that the province has experienced a significant increase in traffic in recent years.
According to the 2025 National Inventory Report based on 2023 data, P.E.I.’s total greenhouse gas emissions were reported at 1.59 megatonnes, showing a nearly one per cent reduction from the previous year. The province aims to further reduce emissions to below 1.2 megatonnes by 2030 as stipulated in the Net-zero Carbon Act.
Despite a 17 per cent population growth, P.E.I. achieved three years of consistent reductions in overall emissions. Minister Arsenault credited the success to the province’s environmental initiatives, particularly highlighting programs like home insulation rebates and the heat pump program as key contributors to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
A new net-zero action plan is set to be unveiled in the winter, outlining the province’s initiatives for the next five years, with transportation being a focal point. While existing programs such as the active transportation fund and “toonie transit” have shown promise, P.E.I. is exploring additional measures such as electric vehicle rebates and charging infrastructure to further address transportation emissions.
In light of electricity shortages, Minister Arsenault emphasized the importance of maintaining a balance between environmental protection and grid sustainability. He noted that the use of combustion turbine generators by Maritime Electric would have minimal impact on net-zero goals, serving as backup generation for the island.
Continuing education and incentivizing behavioral changes are also key priorities for the province to promote a more sustainable environment. The latest Minister’s Report on Climate Change revealed that P.E.I. allocated $266.6 million towards climate action initiatives across various departments in 2024-2025.
