More than a hundred individuals, accompanied by children and pets, sought shelter in the basement of a community hall for the second consecutive night as red tornado warnings inundated their mobile devices on Saturday. Chris Stewart recounted his experience to CBC News, mentioning that he was having dinner in Aquadeo, Sask., when the fire alarm sounded again. Situated 40 kilometers north of the Battlefords on Jackfish Lake, Aquadeo witnessed the gathering of over 100 people in the hall’s basement on both occasions, as everyone remained calm despite initial apprehensions.
Multiple communities in west-central Saskatchewan, such as Turtleford, Glaslyn, Medstead, Edam, Paynton, Rabbit Lake, and Spiritwood, were under tornado warnings on Friday and Saturday, as a slow-moving system from Alberta collided with another weather system, according to Environment Canada. Meteorologist Kyle Ziolkowski stated that while such occurrences are relatively rare, they are not entirely uncommon or abnormal.
The storms on Saturday brought heavy rainfall ranging from 20 to 40 millimeters, along with hailstones varying from ping-pong to golf ball sizes near Neilburg and wind gusts of up to 90 km/h near North Battleford. Although Environment Canada did not confirm any tornado touchdowns on Saturday, Friday witnessed a different scenario, as Shannon Risling recalled witnessing a tornado touching down near Jackfish Lake after spotting a menacing wall cloud while at the beach with her daughter.
By the time of the second touchdown, Risling had already contacted Environment Canada to report the incident. Ziolkowski emphasized the limitations in storm monitoring, stating that they rely on available data for their alerts. Looking ahead, Ziolkowski forecasted the return of calmer conditions and a high-pressure ridge in the upcoming week for the Prairies.
As the skies cleared, Stewart was back on the water on Sunday morning, enjoying a day of fishing under the beautiful weather forecast for the day.
