Prince Albert Fire Department investigators have concluded that multiple fires, all caused by humans, ravaged the Prince Albert Salvation Army building on Christmas night. Deputy Chief Alex Paul stated that their findings have been handed over to the police for further investigation into the locations and causes of the fires.
The Salvation Army confirmed that its community services building at 900 Central Ave. has been completely destroyed, following the blaze that started at approximately 8 p.m. on December 25. Two investigators from the Prince Albert Fire Department, along with an independent investigator hired by the building’s insurance company, inspected the burnt premises in the northern Saskatchewan city on Monday. It was discovered that the fires were ignited in various separate areas within the building.
Although the Salvation Army had insurance coverage for the 13,000-square-foot structure, the extent of the damage covered remains uncertain. Major Ed Dean of the Prince Albert Salvation Army expressed deep sorrow over the intentional destruction of the building, emphasizing it as a significant loss. Dean mentioned the organization’s desire to reconstruct on the original Central Avenue site, highlighting the community’s need for a new building rather than another parking lot.
Currently, the Salvation Army has established a temporary facility at the Union Centre in downtown Prince Albert for the winter season. The charity continues to provide essential services for the homeless, including an overnight warming shelter, daytime shelter, and a meal program six days a week. However, some services, such as laundry and showers, are unavailable at the temporary location. Additionally, the Salvation Army’s ministry has temporarily relocated to the Church of the Nazarene.
Those wishing to assist the Salvation Army can contribute by calling the office to make a donation, sending a check by mail, or donating online. The organization is grateful for any support as it strives to continue its vital work in the community during this challenging period.
