Canadian Military Dispatched to Aid Pimicikamak Cree Nation

The Canadian government has arranged for military assistance to aid the Pimicikamak Cree Nation in response to a prolonged power outage that caused significant damage to numerous residences, leading to the evacuation of thousands of individuals.

In a public message on the social platform X, Eleanor Olszewski, the Minister of Emergency Management for Canada, announced that a specialized unit from the Canadian Armed Forces will be dispatched to the northern Manitoba First Nation. The military team will focus on assessing and providing advice on essential areas such as water treatment and sewage systems, power generation, project management, and logistics, as stated by Olszewski.

The decision to send military personnel was made following a request from the Pimicikamak Cree Nation leadership nine days earlier. The leaders sought assistance, particularly from plumbers and technicians, as the estimated repair timeline could span several weeks to months.

Although the exact number of military personnel to be deployed to the First Nation, located approximately 530 kilometers north of Winnipeg, and the timing are unspecified in Olszewski’s communication, National Defence representative Nick Drescher Brown emphasized that the military members will be deployed promptly to support the evaluation of necessary repairs alongside provincial and local authorities to ensure the functionality of water treatment, sewage, and power systems. Additionally, they will offer guidance on project management and logistical requirements in Pimicikamak.

Chief David Monias expressed relief upon receiving confirmation that the military would be arriving to provide assistance. He highlighted the urgent need for help with repairing the damaged water and sewer infrastructure, which posed contamination risks to the community’s water intake system. Approximately 10 to 15 military personnel with expertise in engineering and logistics are expected to join the community over the upcoming weekend.

As the military personnel focus on repairing community infrastructure, tradespeople, including local workers and volunteers, will be assessing and addressing the damage to affected homes. Officials are still evaluating the extent of damage to over 1,300 homes in Pimicikamak, following a widespread plumbing crisis triggered by a four-day power outage that left at least 200 homes uninhabitable.

The power disruption occurred when a 300-meter power line between two islands in the Nelson River broke on December 28. While Manitoba Hydro restored power to the community shortly after, the subsequent burst pipes due to freezing temperatures prompted the evacuation of about 4,000 individuals from the First Nation, which has a resident population of 7,000, to other locations like Winnipeg and Thompson.

Premier Wab Kinew commended the armed forces for their swift response, recognizing the importance of providing much-needed support to Pimicikamak promptly. Pimicikamak Coun. Shirley Robinson expressed gratitude for the military deployment, emphasizing the community’s urgent need for assistance to bring residents back home.

Leader Monias assured evacuees that efforts are underway to ensure a safe return to their homes as soon as possible.
