Children’s book author Julia Donaldson recently shared in an interview how her iconic book “The Gruffalo” defied her expectations by becoming a success. Despite initial doubts about its dark themes and rhyming style not being in vogue back in 1999, the book became a hit and led to the creation of sequels like “Gruffalo Granny.”
The latest installment, “Gruffalo Granny,” features the original Gruffalo and his child preparing for the arrival of Granny, who has an enormous appetite. Donaldson mentioned that the writing process for this book mirrored that of “The Gruffalo,” with a focus on creating a compelling story without worrying too much about the audience’s reception.
The promotional efforts for “Gruffalo Granny” have been extensive, with the book quickly becoming the top-selling book in the UK for 2026 across all genres and age groups. Donaldson expressed her delight at the book’s success and the continued popularity of the Gruffalo characters among both children and adults.
While Donaldson hinted that “Gruffalo Granny” might mark the end of her Gruffalo series, she assured fans that her career as a children’s writer is far from over. Her upcoming book, “Winnifred Duck,” inspired by the true story of rubber ducks lost at sea, is set to be released next year. The tale of the wayward rubber ducks and the scientific lessons they imparted resonated with Donaldson, prompting her to turn it into a new children’s book.
