“Congressional Republicans Vote to Lift Ban on Mining Near Minnesota Wilderness”

Congressional Republicans have passed a resolution to lift a federal ban on mining near Minnesota’s Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, aiming to pave the way for a South American company to extract valuable metals from the pristine region’s forests, lakes, and bogs.

Despite warnings from conservationists about potential severe pollution in one of the last wild areas in the country, House Republicans approved the resolution last month. Following suit, the Senate voted 50-49 on Thursday to send the measure to President Donald Trump for approval.

Democrats raised concerns on the Senate floor, emphasizing that lifting the ban could establish a risky precedent leading to the removal of protections on public lands nationwide. Senators Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith of Minnesota criticized Republicans for undermining their state’s heritage.

Klobuchar, a former supporter of iron mining now running for governor, described the Boundary Waters as a place of serene beauty. Smith accused the GOP of disregarding the wishes of Minnesotans opposed to the destruction of the wilderness area.

The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness spans approximately 240 kilometers in the Superior National Forest along Minnesota’s border with Canada, offering a picturesque landscape of lakes, forests, and starry nights. The region attracts thousands of outdoor enthusiasts annually for canoeing, kayaking, and camping adventures.

Twin Metals Minnesota LLC, a subsidiary of Chile-based Antofagasta Minerals, proposed mining copper, nickel, and other precious metals in the national forest. The company projected job creation and economic benefits for northeastern Minnesota communities.

President Trump’s administration supported the company’s mineral leases, while the Biden administration terminated the deals in early 2022 and imposed a 20-year mining moratorium in part of the forest to protect the watershed and wilderness.

Environmentalists and outdoor enthusiasts are opposing the lifting of the ban, fearing pollution from mining activities could harm the region’s ecosystem and cultural heritage, particularly affecting local wildlife and the Chippewa tribal culture.

While Trump is expected to sign the resolution, the timeline for opening a mine remains uncertain. Construction could take several years, subject to federal and state permits, potential legal challenges, and public opinion shifts.
