“Ice Master Moffatt Prepares Olympic Rink in Italy”

Chris Jones provides insights from Italy prior to the upcoming Milano Cortina Olympics. Don Moffatt, known as the “ice master,” found himself in the limelight at the Milano Santagiulia hockey arena, where his connection to the game began in his childhood in Peterborough, Ontario, watching his father create a backyard rink. Over the years, Moffatt has developed expertise in ice maintenance and is now preparing the ice for his fifth Winter Olympics, marking the most challenging task in his extensive career.

Due to construction delays, Moffatt faced a tight timeline to construct the latest rink, starting just before Christmas. Typically, ice undergoes extensive testing for months or even years before being used in high-level competitions. However, Moffatt’s latest ice creation was less than three weeks old when it was tested by several Italian teams over the weekend, closely monitored by the NHL and global hockey enthusiasts.

Despite the pressure, the ice held up well during three games played on Saturday, mimicking Olympic-level demands. An incident where a small hole appeared during Friday’s game garnered attention, with the green watering can used for repairs becoming a notable element in the arena’s unfolding story.

The NHL is expected to announce on Sunday whether it will allow its players to participate in the Olympics for the first time since 2014. Organizers remain confident that the world’s top players will compete in Milan in February, as affirmed by Andrea Francisi, the chief games operations officer.

Moffatt understands the critical role his ice plays in determining the fate of the men’s tournament. While a news conference with him was canceled, organizers stated that Moffatt expressed contentment with the playing field, dismissing the Friday incident as a minor detail in the standard ice maintenance process.

Having previously handled notable ice surfaces, such as the one where Sidney Crosby scored his golden goal, Moffatt approaches ice maintenance with a blend of scientific precision and artistic intuition. He views ice as a living entity with unique characteristics influenced by various environmental factors. Despite challenges like dust from ongoing construction at Milano Santagiulia, Moffatt remains focused on perfecting the ice for the upcoming Olympics.

Continuously monitoring and making adjustments, Moffatt’s dedication to his craft reflects both a scientific approach and an intuitive feel for the ice’s nuances. With the countdown to the Olympics ticking, Moffatt’s meticulous work ethic ensures that the ice surface will be ready for the world’s elite athletes, emphasizing his commitment to excellence.
