Haines Junction’s beloved Frosty’s burger and ice cream stand, typically closed in colder seasons, is now welcoming customers year-round under new ownership. Grace Clunies-Ross and Jane Mendoza took over the establishment in February 2025 with a vision of fostering a sense of community in town.
Clunies-Ross emphasized the importance of social connection during the long winter months, noting the limited gathering spots in Haines Junction. With only a few eateries, a skating rink, and the Daku Cultural Centre available, the closure of the curling rink and swimming pool left locals seeking alternative venues for socializing.
The decision to keep Frosty’s open throughout the winter stemmed from the owners’ plan to utilize the kitchen for their catering business expansion. Having successfully managed the Top Spot Convenience store for the past eight years, Clunies-Ross and Mendoza are no strangers to the food service industry.
While maintaining the distinct culinary offerings at both locations, Clunies-Ross expressed her lifelong dream of owning a café, which is now being realized with the addition of Frosty’s to their ventures. Despite potential menu enhancements in the future, the focus remains on preserving the beloved traditions of Frosty’s, including their commitment to employing local youth and residents.
A notable change awaiting customers at Frosty’s is the upcoming introduction of a coffee bar within the dining area, expected to open by spring. The initiative has been well-received by the community, with residents like Kari Johnston expressing gratitude for the opportunity to socialize and enjoy a warm beverage during the winter months. Johnston commended the owners for their positive impact on the local economy and their continuous efforts to enhance community life.
