Ye, the artist previously known as Kanye West, has delayed his upcoming performance in Marseille as French authorities indicated their intention to bar the concert. This decision by Ye follows being prohibited from entering the U.K., where he was set to headline the Wireless Festival in July, due to backlash over his history of making antisemitic comments.
In a statement on the social platform X, Ye expressed that after careful consideration, he personally chose to postpone the Marseille show indefinitely. He emphasized his dedication to making amends and asked for understanding of his sincerity.
The rapper, who adopted the name Ye in 2021, was slated to perform at Marseille’s Stade Vélodrome on June 11. French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez vowed to explore all options to prevent the show from proceeding as planned.
Marseille Mayor Benoît Payan had previously opposed Ye’s visit to the diverse city, known for its long history of immigration. Payan stated, “I refuse to let Marseille be a platform for those promoting hatred and extreme Nazism. Kanye West is not welcome at the Vélodrome, our community hub and a place for all Marseillais.”
Ye has faced extensive criticism for his antisemitic remarks and expressions of admiration for Adolf Hitler. In the past, he released a track titled “Heil Hitler” and advertised a swastika T-shirt on his website. Australian authorities revoked his visa in July following the release of the controversial song.
In January, the 48-year-old artist issued a public apology in the Wall Street Journal, attributing his actions to a manic episode driven by his bipolar disorder. Ye reiterated his accountability for his conduct but expressed his desire not to involve his fans in the controversy, emphasizing their importance to him. He concluded, “Looking forward to the upcoming shows. See you at the top of the globe.”
