Prime Minister Mark Carney, along with other federal party leaders, is scheduled to visit Tumbler Ridge, B.C., to participate in a vigil honoring the victims of the recent shooting incident. The community is still grappling with the aftermath of the tragic event that resulted in the loss of nine lives, including the perpetrator, and left over 25 individuals injured, marking one of the deadliest mass shootings in Canadian history.
The Prime Minister was extended an invitation to attend the upcoming vigil by Tumbler Ridge Mayor Darryl Krakowka, as confirmed by a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office. Notable leaders such as Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet, NDP interim Leader Don Davies, and Green Party Leader Elizabeth May are also expected to be present at the event. Additionally, Governor General Mary Simon has confirmed her attendance at the vigil, as announced by her office.
In response to the tragedy, the House of Commons observed a moment of silence, suspending its usual proceedings, with party leaders offering solemn remarks in lieu of the customary question period. Prime Minister Carney expressed deep sorrow over the devastating violence that has shocked the nation, offering condolences to the families affected by the tragic events in the mining town nestled in the Rocky Mountains foothills.
Following Carney’s statement, various party leaders, including Poilievre, Blanchet, Davies, and May, addressed the House, sharing heartfelt messages of support and empathy for the Tumbler Ridge community. The emotional impact of the incident was evident as MPs, including Liberal representatives, showed solidarity and comforted each other during this somber time.
While regular parliamentary business resumed the next day, the House remained somber, with MPs acknowledging the tragedy and seeking updates on the government’s support for Tumbler Ridge. Conservative House leader Andrew Scheer initiated the question period by offering condolences to the affected families and inquiring about the assistance being provided to the community.
In response to Scheer’s inquiry, Liberal House leader Steven MacKinnon assured that Prime Minister Carney would be attending the vigil in Tumbler Ridge to pay respects to the victims. MacKinnon emphasized the collaborative efforts of federal representatives with provincial and municipal authorities to provide support and assistance to the grieving community.
Ahead of the official question period, several MPs expressed their condolences, with Conservative MP Todd Doherty expressing the profound sorrow felt by his constituents in the neighboring district and extending heartfelt sympathies to those affected. The tragic events have deeply impacted communities across the nation, prompting reflections on the importance of showing love and support to one another during times of adversity.
