WNBA Nears Historic Million-Dollar Player Deals

The WNBA is on track to have its first million-dollar players following a significant breakthrough in negotiations between the league and its players’ union on a new collective bargaining agreement. While some details are still being ironed out by legal teams on both sides, a term sheet is expected to be completed soon for player and league approval.

The groundbreaking agreement is anticipated to substantially raise player salaries, with top athletes potentially earning up to $1.4 million in the initial year. The salary cap for the 2026 season is forecasted to reach $7 million, with average salaries exceeding $585,000 and a minimum salary around $300,000, representing a fourfold increase from the previous season.

This deal marks a pivotal moment for the WNBA, aligning player compensation with league revenue and aiming to elevate standards across various aspects of the game. The union has expressed enthusiasm for the transformative impact of the agreement, reflecting the league’s growing popularity and success in recent years.

After lengthy and intense negotiations spanning over eight days and more than 100 hours, the agreement was reached in the early hours of Wednesday. Both sides are pleased with the outcome, emphasizing the historical significance for women’s sports and the positive implications for current and future players.

Looking ahead, the WNBA faces a tight timeline to prepare for the upcoming season, with tasks such as conducting an expansion draft for new teams, negotiating with free agents, and commencing training camps in April. Despite the challenges, the league is eager to move forward and focus on the upcoming season opener on May 8.
