Lia Pereira and Trennt Michaud experienced a moment of disbelief and joy at the Canadian figure skating championships when they unexpectedly clinched their first national title. The duo, accustomed to finishing as runners-up to Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps, saw their scores surpass the reigning champions due to errors in Stellato-Dudek and Deschamps’ free skate performance.
Performing their “Gladiator” routine, Pereira and Michaud scored 135.03 points in their free program, securing a total of 204.14 points and claiming the gold medal. Stellato-Dudek and Deschamps settled for silver, while Kelly Ann Laurin and Loucas Éthier took home the bronze.
Reflecting on their victory, Michaud expressed their dedication to the sport, stating, “This is what we live for.” Pereira added, “This is unbelievable,” highlighting their perseverance and passion for figure skating cultivated over their three-and-a-half-year partnership.
The winning pair, Pereira and Michaud, initially joined forces in August 2022, with Michaud predicting their future success as national champions. Their journey to the top was marked by hard work and determination, as recalled by Pereira during their early training sessions.
Despite their victory, Pereira and Michaud were focused on their upcoming participation in the Milan Cortina Olympics, while Stellato-Dudek and Deschamps aimed to bounce back after a challenging performance affected by Stellato-Dudek’s illness.
Stellato-Dudek and Deschamps, determined to overcome setbacks, remained optimistic about their Olympic prospects despite their disappointing finish at the Canadian championships.
