“Arctic Diamond Mine Faces Bankruptcy Amid Price Decline”

The parent company of Ekati Diamond Mine has sought creditor protection due to financial struggles resulting from a significant decline in diamond prices. The company’s inability to meet financial obligations has put jobs, payments to Indigenous communities, and the mine’s future at risk.

Arctic Canadian Diamond Company, which operates Ekati Diamond Mine in the Northwest Territories, filed for creditor protection in the Supreme Court of British Columbia. The court granted the company legal protection until at least May 11 to shield it from creditor actions.

Initially opened in 1998, Ekati Diamond Mine employed around 700 workers in 2024, with a significant percentage being Indigenous and northern residents. However, the workforce had shrunk to about 340 employees by March 31. Last year, the mine achieved a milestone of extracting 100 million carats of diamonds over its 26-year history.

To sustain operations and protect jobs, the company secured a $175 million loan from the federal government. Government officials, including N.W.T Industry Minister Caitlin Cleveland and Union of Northern Workers president Gayla Thunstrom, expressed concerns and vowed to support affected workers through the challenging times.

Court documents reveal significant financial distress for the company, with liabilities totaling approximately $655 million. The filings highlight the critical need for stabilizing operations to meet financial obligations and sustain Ekati Mine. Factors contributing to the company’s financial woes include plummeting diamond prices, competition from lab-grown alternatives, reduced demand from China, and tariff-related impacts.

The company’s diamond sales dropped from over $600 million in 2024 to about $253 million in the following year. The federal government’s emergency funding, provided in two stages, aimed to assist the company, with conditions attached for receiving the full amount.

Amid the global economic challenges affecting the diamond industry, Ekati Diamond Mine’s future remains uncertain, with ongoing efforts to address financial difficulties and safeguard the interests of workers and communities.
