“Twin Falls Trail in N.W.T. Closed Indefinitely for Safety Assessment”

An iconic trail in the N.W.T. renowned for its waterfall vistas will stay shut until a comprehensive geotechnical assessment of the region is carried out to address soil erosion, posing a severe hazard to trail users, as reported by the territorial government. Twin Falls Park, situated approximately 75 kilometers north of the Alberta border and 50 kilometers south of Hay River, N.W.T., features a primary trail spanning five kilometers along the Hay River, offering stunning views of Alexandra and Louise Falls.

The closure of the entire trail system in the park occurred in November due to soil erosion along the riverbank, including the viewing platforms at both waterfalls, according to government sources. A notice from the territory issued on Tuesday highlighted that the closure signs were disregarded due to non-compliance by visitors, noted Kathy Lepine, the South Slave regional superintendent for the Department of Industry, Tourism, and Investment.

The timeline for reopening the erosion-affected areas remains uncertain due to the extensive damage. A comprehensive geotechnical assessment of the region is necessary to determine the required safety measures for reopening. The closures will persist until enhancements are made to the trails and infrastructure, ensuring the area is safe for public access.

Despite the lack of a confirmed timeline, Lepine mentioned to CBC that the assessment might conclude by July, with potential partial reopening of the trail by late August. Doug Lamalice, a member of the Kátł’odeeche First Nation in Hay River, who previously guided tours in Twin Falls Park trail, expressed concerns about the trail’s deterioration and emphasized its significance to the Dene community.

Observing substantial sections of the canyon wall crumbling over several years, Lamalice described the unsettling noise of collapsing walls resembling thunder, emphasizing the urgency of preserving the interpretive signage narrating the Dene history along the trail. While the trail’s condition remains uncertain, the importance of safeguarding its cultural heritage is paramount to Lamalice and the Dene community.

Additionally, a brief segment of the undamaged trail above Alexandra Falls is temporarily closed due to high water levels, as stated in the release. The Escarpment Creek area nearby has also been closed for an extended period for wildfire remediation efforts. However, amenities such as bathrooms and picnic tables at Louise Falls Campground and Alexandra Falls rest stop will remain accessible to the public during the trail closures.
