U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed openness to engaging with Iranian officials and is exploring various responses, including military options, in light of the recent violent suppression of protests in Iran. The situation in Iran, according to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, is now “under total control” after a surge in protest-related violence over the weekend.
Araqchi mentioned that while Iran is prepared for war, they are also willing to engage in dialogue. Communication channels between Araqchi and U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff are still active, with additional contacts maintained through Switzerland.
President Trump has issued a warning to Iranian leaders, indicating that the U.S. would respond with force if security forces harm protesters. A human rights group based in the U.S., HRANA, has confirmed the deaths of 490 protesters and 48 security personnel, along with over 10,600 arrests.
Despite the lack of an official death toll from Iran and challenges in verifying information independently due to an internet blackout, the protests have not led to visible divisions within Iran’s leadership or security forces. The opposition remains fragmented without clear central leadership.
In response to the protests, Iranian authorities have accused the U.S. and Israel of instigating unrest and have called for nationwide counter-protests. President Trump mentioned that Iran has expressed interest in negotiating its nuclear program, prompting discussions of a potential meeting. However, the U.S. is considering various options, including military strikes, cyber warfare, sanctions, and support for anti-government entities online.
Concerns over the risks of military action have been raised by some U.S. senators, emphasizing the potential unintended consequences of a military strike on Iran. Meanwhile, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, Iran’s parliament speaker, has warned against any aggression towards Iran, threatening retaliation against U.S. bases and allies if attacked.
The protests in Iran, which initially began due to economic hardships, have morphed into broader anti-government sentiments, particularly targeting the Revolutionary Guards and their significant business interests. Efforts to restore internet access in Iran are being discussed, with Araqchi mentioning plans to coordinate the resumption of internet services with security authorities.
Ambassadors from several European countries have been summoned by Iran’s foreign ministry, urging them to withdraw their support for the protesters. The situation remains tense as both Iran and the U.S. consider their next steps amid the ongoing unrest.
