You might have found yourself in a situation where you overspent on a celebration or indulged in a vacation rental that strained your finances. The latest findings from a CIBC poll reveal that over half of Canadians tend to spend the most during the summer on various activities like travel, dining out, and entertainment. With the cost of living on the rise, 74 percent of Canadians are facing challenges in saving money.

Experiencing financial overindulgence can lead to stress and anxiety when the bills arrive. To bounce back from this situation, we sought advice from two experts on how to manage a financial hangover and prevent overspending in the future.

Recognize and Understand Your Emotions

When you exceed your budget, it’s common to feel shame and anxiety. Financial wellness advocate and certified financial planner Shaun Maslyk advises against self-criticism and emphasizes the need to accept and acknowledge your debts without feeling guilty. Understanding the emotions driving your spending habits is crucial, as overspending is often linked to feelings of fear, greed, and stress.

Journalist Bourree Lam suggests an exercise called “How to YOLO responsibly” to evaluate impulse purchases and their long-term impact on your finances. By recognizing and addressing emotional triggers, you can better control your spending impulses.

Recover Financially

After reflecting on your overspending triggers, creating a debt repayment plan can help you regain financial stability. Maslyk advises reviewing expenses to free up funds and prioritizing high-interest debt repayment to alleviate financial burdens. Lam recommends adjusting savings goals to focus on debt repayment before resuming regular saving habits.

Establish Financial Goals

Setting clear financial goals is essential to avoid future financial pitfalls. By aligning your spending with your values and having a specific financial objective, you can resist unnecessary purchases and stay on track with your finances.

Avoid Temptations and Practice Mindful Spending

Identifying triggers that prompt impulsive spending and implementing strategies to curb emotional purchases can prevent future financial regrets. Lam suggests refraining from online shopping triggers and taking a moment to reflect before making significant purchases. By aligning your spending with your values, you can reduce the urge to overspend on unnecessary items.
