“Saskatchewan Braces for Prolonged Heat Wave”

A period of intense heat is expected to persist in Saskatchewan until at least Friday, prompting multiple agencies to emphasize the importance of staying hydrated and cool. Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) forecasts daytime temperatures exceeding 35°C in Regina and Saskatoon, with nighttime temperatures hovering around 20°C. ECCC meteorologist Danielle Desjardins highlighted the need to watch for signs of heat-related health issues, such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke, especially when temperatures soar into the 30s alongside high humidity.

According to the national weather office, symptoms of heat-related illnesses include severe fatigue, dizziness, thirst, and dark urine. It is recommended to drink water frequently, even before feeling thirsty, and take immediate steps to cool the body if experiencing symptoms like headaches, lethargy, or nausea.

In the absence of air conditioning, the City of Saskatoon suggests various strategies to beat the heat, including seeking air-conditioned public spaces, taking cool showers, wearing damp clothing, and using ice packs. The city also advises covering windows, utilizing thermal curtains, and creating airflow by opening windows during cooler periods.

For those with air conditioning, issues may still arise. Michael Shaw from Centennial Plumbing, Heating, and Electrical in Saskatoon reported a significant increase in service calls due to the heat. He recommended checking breakers, thermostat functionality, and furnace filters before seeking professional help.

Motorists are advised by CAA Saskatchewan to carry essentials like water, snacks, and an emergency kit during extreme heat. Ensuring a fully charged phone, maintaining vehicle battery health, and monitoring surroundings are crucial for safe travel in high temperatures.

Public education officer Damandeep Sangha from the Moose Jaw fire department warned against driving over dry grass or mowing lawns to prevent fire risks. Additionally, items like electronics, batteries, and medication should not be left in hot vehicles due to potential overheating dangers. Leaving children or pets in vehicles is strongly discouraged during extreme heat.

Finally, the City of Saskatoon recommends pet owners provide fresh water, monitor pets for heat stress signs, and offer cooling options like wading pools or damp towels to prevent heat-related issues in animals.
