Ridley Scott’s “The Dog Stars” Fails to Soar

A major disappointment hit the box office this weekend as the film “The Dog Stars,” produced by 20th Century Fox, only managed to pull in $19.3 million in its opening weekend in the US. Directed by Ridley Scott and starring Jacob Elordi, the movie was met with lackluster reception, especially considering its estimated production cost of $80 million.

Following a group of individuals navigating a post-apocalyptic America after a devastating pandemic, “The Dog Stars” faced criticism for its slow pace, cliched genre elements, and a peculiar ending. This underwhelming performance adds to a string of box office misses for Ridley Scott, with his recent films like “Napoleon” and “Gladiator 2” also falling short of expectations.

Despite the challenges faced by the film industry, some standout successes like “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” “The Odyssey,” “Michael,” and “Toy Story 5” have contributed to what could be a remarkable year for cinema in 2026. Unlike previous years dominated by sequels and franchises, this year has seen a rise in original and standalone films resonating with audiences.

In a positive trend for the industry, a diverse range of films including low-budget hits such as “Backrooms” and “Obsession,” as well as non-franchise gems like “Project Hail Mary,” have driven box office growth. The US domestic box office revenue has reached $6.2 billion, indicating a 15% increase compared to the same period last year.

Similarly, the English-language Canadian box office has seen substantial growth, propelled by unique narratives like “Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie,” “Little Lorraine,” and “Mile End Kicks.” According to Telefilm Canada’s latest report, box office earnings in Canada surged by nearly 180% in the first two quarters of 2026 compared to the previous year.

While the film industry shows signs of revival, with anticipated releases like “Dune 3” and “Avengers: Doomsday,” the performance of “The Dog Stars” reflects evolving audience preferences. As viewers seek innovative storytelling and thought-provoking content, films relying on conventional narratives, like “The Dog Stars,” face challenges resonating with modern audiences.
