In a recent incident on the frozen Connecticut river, Norwalk deputy fire chief Jonathan Maggio recounted the rescue of a trapped swan. Initially presumed lifeless by onlookers due to its motionless state, Maggio and his team refused to give up hope. Despite the uncertain duration of the swan’s entrapment, they were determined to attempt a rescue.
Upon approaching the swan on the ice, Maggio shared that the bird unexpectedly raised its head, sparking a wave of optimism among the rescue crew and spectators. The heartening moment led to applause from the relieved onlookers.
The rescue operation unfolded last Thursday when Maggio received reports of a distressed swan stranded in the icy waters. While Maggio had prior experience in saving individuals from similar situations, this marked his first avian rescue mission.
Located beneath a bridge in an elevated section of the river, the male swan had likely sought refuge from harsh weather conditions only to find itself ensnared by freezing water. A collaborative effort involving 23 personnel from the fire department and a wildlife rescue agency successfully extricated the swan after a 30-minute endeavor, employing ropes, ladders, and protective gear.
Following the rescue, the swan, affectionately dubbed Clancey, was wrapped in blankets, delicately freed from the ice, and transported to a veterinary center for treatment. Despite arriving cold and dehydrated, Clancey responded well to the care provided, displaying signs of recovery within a short period.
Currently under the care of the Norwalk Veterinary Hospital, Clancey is anticipated to make a full recuperation. Maggio expressed pride in the successful operation, emphasizing the gratification of witnessing the swan’s safe retrieval and the team’s collective achievement.
