A previously issued do-not-consume directive has been removed concerning the drinking water in Kugaaruk, Nunavut. However, residents are still urged to boil water before consumption as a precautionary measure. The territory’s health department, in a recent announcement, stated that a boil water advisory remains in effect for both the water treatment facility and all natural sources of drinking water due to a mechanical problem at the plant.
Following the intrusion of seawater into the water treatment plant last month, which led to an inability to produce clean water, a state of emergency was declared in the community of approximately 1,200 residents. Although the state of emergency was lifted in less than a week, the local authorities highlighted that tap water was still not safe for drinking even after undergoing boiling or filtration processes.
The latest advisory, issued on Tuesday, indicates that the do-not-consume order has been rescinded while the boil water advisory remains active. Accordingly, residents are reminded to boil water intended for drinking, making beverages, preparing infant formula, cooking, dental hygiene, or washing fruits and vegetables. The health department has committed to informing residents promptly once the advisory is no longer in effect.
