A heat wave over the weekend led to the breaking of daily high temperature records in 26 locations across British Columbia on Sunday. According to Environment Canada, Lytton experienced the highest temperature at 36.8°C, surpassing the previous record of 35.4°C set in 2002. Other areas such as Lillooet, Cache Creek, Pemberton, and Port Alberni also saw temperatures exceeding or hitting 35°C, with Pemberton reaching 36.3°C.
Notably, Vancouver recorded a new daily high of 26.8°C, breaking the 1932 record by 1.2°C. Victoria, on the other hand, surpassed 30°C, breaking a previous record from 1999. The warm weather is forecasted to continue across most parts of the province throughout the week.
Several other communities also experienced record-breaking temperatures on Sunday, including Tofino, Whistler, Squamish, Sechelt, Qualicum Beach, Powell River, Port Hardy, Nanaimo, Hope, Abbotsford, Campbell River, and Bella Bella.
