A groundbreaking research initiative at the University of Windsor is currently monitoring nocturnal bird migration in real-time through an innovative research network spanning Canada. Natalie Emerick and Madison Bygrove, graduate students at the university, have installed 100 acoustic recorders from Vancouver Island to Newfoundland, capturing and categorizing bird sounds using AI technology known as Motus Audio.
These 3D-printed recorders house microphones pointed towards the night sky to capture bird calls, enabling the researchers to collect data on nocturnal bird communication and flight patterns that were previously challenging to observe and record.
Emerick highlighted the significance of their research, noting that this nocturnal flight call monitoring project is the first of its kind in eastern Canada. The advanced tracking and logging technologies employed in their study have streamlined data analysis, allowing them to process large quantities of data efficiently.
By leveraging Canadian migration monitoring networks and collaborating with volunteers, the researchers have strategically placed the recorders in various locations, facilitating a comprehensive study of nocturnal bird migration patterns across the country.
The research also aims to investigate the impact of artificial night light on bird behavior, with Bygrove emphasizing the potential disorientation caused by bright lights. As the fall migration season approaches, the researchers are eager to delve deeper into the collected data and further refine their species identification algorithm.
The Motus Audio technology driving this research was developed a decade ago by a group of scientists to monitor animals equipped with specific transmitters. Ecologist Ryan Norris, who has contributed to the project by hosting acoustic devices in Ontario, highlighted the importance of tracking birds in remote regions like the Canadian boreal forest.
The project aims to provide valuable insights into bird migration patterns throughout the seasons, offering a unique perspective on avian movements across Canada. Norris emphasized the challenge of accurately identifying bird species through sound analysis, underscoring the research’s potential to address declines in bird populations.
The research not only sheds light on nocturnal bird behavior but also sets the stage for a comprehensive understanding of avian movements across the country, paving the way for future conservation efforts.
