“Public Inquiry Probes Alleged Police Misconduct in Myles Gray’s Death”

A public inquiry delved into the events preceding Myles Gray’s demise in August 2015, with witnesses recounting their encounters with him. The inquiry is evaluating whether Vancouver Police Department constables, specifically Kory Folkestad, Eric Birzneck, Derek Cain, Josh Wong, Beau Spencer, Hardeep Sahota, and Nick Thompson, abused their authority by using excessive force leading to Gray’s death. The officers have refuted the accusations.

Gray succumbed to injuries sustained during an altercation with the police, including severe injuries like ruptured testicles, a fractured eye socket, and extensive bruising. Witnesses testified on Tuesday, including Andreah Pilgrim, who observed Gray’s behavior near a Burnaby yard before his tragic end.

Pilgrim, an employee at an insurance company, described seeing Gray acting peculiarly near a bus stop, exhibiting signs of distress and agitation. She expressed concern for her safety and that of her colleagues due to Gray’s behavior. Another witness, Muhammed Reza, described an encounter where Gray engaged in erratic and concerning behavior, leading to a series of distressing events. Reza reported Gray’s actions to the authorities as he appeared to be in need of assistance.

The inquiry revealed that following a confrontation with a female VPD officer, Gray’s behavior escalated, prompting the intervention of additional officers. Gray ultimately disappeared from view, with witnesses hearing distressing screams in the aftermath. The hearing, scheduled to span ten weeks, aims to shed light on the events leading to Gray’s tragic demise.

Friends and family of Gray have expressed concerns that the focus of the inquiry seems to be shifting towards Gray’s character rather than the actions of the police officers involved. The hearing will resume on Wednesday for further deliberation.
