Montreal Iranians Rally for Freedom in Iran

Iranian residents of Montreal gathered in the downtown area on Saturday to express solidarity with the citizens of Iran. Recent protests in Iran, sparked by economic challenges and discontent with the government, have been ongoing for the past two weeks. Demonstrators in Montreal voiced their desire for freedom, democracy, and the right to make choices.

The cutting of internet and phone communications in Iran has raised concerns about escalated repression against protesters. The death toll from the protests has reportedly risen to at least 65 individuals, with over 2,300 people detained, according to the U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency.

Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, attributed the protests to rioters and alleged external influences. Concerns are mounting for individuals in Iran, as the internet blackout has limited their ability to communicate. Montreal rally attendees expressed anxiety over the safety of their loved ones in Iran and the challenges of being productive amid the ongoing situation.

Despite warnings from American President Donald Trump against harsh crackdowns on protests, Iran’s attorney general issued stern warnings, including the threat of considering protesters as “enemies of God,” a charge punishable by death. Some Montreal rally participants fear foreign intervention and advocate for Iranians to lead their own change, while acknowledging the potential need for external assistance in resolving the crisis.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney condemned the violence against protesters in Iran and called for the protection of freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. Protesters in Montreal are hopeful for a transition to a more peaceful and economically stable regime in Iran.
