Housing Minister Gregor Robertson defended his decision to reduce the funding allocated to Toronto through a national housing program due to the city council’s failure to uphold its promise to increase urban density. The federal government will provide Toronto with $10 million less than anticipated under the Housing Accelerator Fund, aimed at supporting local projects to expedite home construction.
Robertson emphasized that the objective of the fund is to promote the development of affordable housing across Canada. He highlighted the importance of accountability in ensuring that communities fulfill their commitments towards creating more accessible housing options. The federal government has established agreements with 241 Canadian municipalities to support this initiative.
Despite the funding cut, Robertson stressed the enduring partnership between Ottawa and Toronto concerning housing issues. In a letter to Mayor Olivia Chow, Robertson expressed disappointment in Toronto’s decision to restrict permissions for sixplex construction to only nine wards, falling short of the initial ambitions to implement citywide allowance.
Addressing concerns raised by housing advocates, Robertson underscored the significance of cities like Toronto leading by example in fostering housing development. The decision to reduce funding serves as a reminder for all communities to honor their commitments in advancing affordable housing initiatives.
