Essex County Officials Seek Funding for Manning Road Overpass
Essex County is seeking assistance from the Ontario government to finance the construction of an overpass at the intersection of Manning Road and County Road 22. The estimated cost of the project is $105 million, aimed at alleviating the congestion issues experienced by the approximately 42,000 vehicles passing through the area daily.
Sandra Zwiers, the county’s Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), emphasized the necessity of removing stoplights and installing an overpass to improve traffic flow at the intersection, a vital connection to Highway 401. County representatives presented their proposal to the Ministry of Transportation at the Rural Ontario Municipal Association (ROMA) conference in Toronto, requesting $60 million in funding from the upcoming provincial budget.
The expected growth in traffic congestion at the intersection, driven by new housing developments and economic expansions, underscores the urgency for provincial support. Zwiers highlighted the regional and provincial significance of the traffic flow, particularly with upcoming projects like the NextStar EV battery plant and a new acute care hospital.
Tecumseh Mayor Gary McNamara also supports the development of the grade-separated interchange, which will connect Windsor and Tecumseh to accommodate the anticipated growth in the region. With plans for 8,000 new housing units in Tecumseh in the coming years, the overpass is crucial for facilitating the movement of commuters and goods, especially as the NextStar EV battery plant ramps up operations.
McNamara stressed the importance of timely action, citing current gridlock issues and the potential economic benefits of investing in infrastructure. Safety concerns, including a high rate of accidents and near misses at the intersection, further underscore the need for improvements.
Although the Ministry of Transportation has shown interest in supporting the project, no firm commitments have been secured. With rapid growth and increasing traffic pressures, Essex County is urging swift action to advance the construction plans. Zwiers emphasized the county’s readiness to proceed with the necessary steps and urged for collaborative efforts to expedite the project.
