Indigenous Journalism Trailblazer Dan David Dies at 73

Renowned Kanien’kehá:ka journalist Thaioronióhte Dan David, a key figure in establishing the news department of the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN), has passed away at the age of 73 after battling cancer, as confirmed by his sister, Marie David. His colleague and friend Karyn Pugliese, an APTN host and producer, described his death as a significant loss for the Indigenous journalists he mentored and supported in launching their careers.

Pugliese referred to Dan David as the “father of APTN News,” emphasizing his instrumental role in reshaping the narrative of Indigenous stories through the inception of APTN News in 2000, previously known as InVision News. David’s motivation stemmed from his firsthand experience during the Oka Crisis in 1990, where he witnessed the misrepresentation of his community, Kanehsatà:ke, in mainstream media reports.

Despite being actively involved in reporting on the conflict as a CBC journalist, David was sidelined due to perceived bias, a decision that frustrated him deeply. His dedication to truthful and unbiased journalism led him to assist in the establishment of the South African Broadcasting Corporation post-apartheid, an experience that significantly influenced his approach in shaping APTN’s news division.

Known for his expertise and humor, David’s legacy lives on through the journalists he trained, instilling in them the importance of authentic storytelling. His inclusive leadership style, coupled with humility, resonated within the newsroom, creating an environment where everyone’s voice was valued. In his nearly five-decade career, David also held positions at Toronto Metropolitan University and the University of Toronto, contributing to the education and advancement of aspiring journalists.

Remembered as a compassionate and influential figure, Dan David’s impact extended beyond journalism, as reflected in the outpouring of tributes highlighting his lasting contributions to those he taught and inspired.
