Picture yourself at Harry Styles’ Together, Together tour, enjoying the music in the audience when suddenly, the crowd erupts into singing a different song by a different artist.
Harry Styles is currently performing at Madison Square Garden in New York City for his 30-show residency as part of the tour. While fans typically sing along to his songs, a new trend has emerged where fans chant the lyrics of 5 Seconds of Summer’s song “Telephone Busy” during the instrumental break of Styles’ “Ready, Steady, Go,” gaining momentum with each performance.
The trend originated from a fan remix on TikTok by user @millsberry75, who mashed up the two songs in a video posted in March. 5 Seconds of Summer acknowledged the remix in August during a DJ set at Lollapalooza festival in Salt Shed Chicago.
Videos on social media capture fans joining in on the trend, with the chants becoming noticeably louder in recent performances. Fans are embracing the crossover between Harry Styles and 5 Seconds of Summer, with many expressing joy at the trend spreading on platforms like TikTok.
The connection between One Direction, where Harry Styles rose to fame, and 5 Seconds of Summer adds to the excitement. 5SOS initially gained exposure when One Direction member Louis Tomlinson shared their music online in 2012. The bands have a history of collaboration, including 5SOS opening for One Direction on tours in the past.
Fans are thrilled to witness this organic trend evolve from social media into real-life fan experiences, highlighting the power of online communities to influence trends within fandoms.
5 Seconds of Summer has acknowledged the enthusiasm surrounding the songs, with drummer Ashton Irwin appreciating fan videos of the chants at Harry Styles’ shows. While Styles has yet to directly address the trend, the increasing volume suggests he may acknowledge it as the tour progresses.
With several more shows ahead, including a series at Madison Square Garden and upcoming performances at Rogers Stadium, fans anticipate the trend to continue growing and becoming a staple of the tour experience.
The excitement and anticipation among fans showcase the strong bond between music artists and their dedicated followers, creating unforgettable moments at live performances.
