Greenland Seeks Canadian Support Amid U.S. Annexation Concerns

In the midst of ongoing concerns about potential annexation from the U.S., Governor General Mary Simon noted that the people of Greenland are looking to Canada for support. Simon, a seasoned diplomat and Canada’s first ambassador for Circumpolar Affairs, has conversed with Greenlanders who express unease over U.S. President Donald Trump’s aspirations to incorporate their territory into the United States.

According to Simon, Greenlanders are seeking Canadian assistance to ensure the preservation of their relationship with Denmark and to navigate the uncertainties arising from media reports. Greenland, a semi-autonomous region under Danish jurisdiction, manages its internal affairs independently while Denmark controls its foreign policy and defense.

With a population of around 56,000, predominantly comprising individuals of Inuit or mixed Inuit and Danish heritage, Greenland remains vigilant amid the geopolitical landscape.

During her recent visit to Mexico City, Governor General Simon, who is of Inuk descent, engaged with representatives from Indigenous nations and met with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. Emphasizing the importance of reinforcing ties between Canada and Mexico, Simon highlighted the groundwork laid by Prime Minister Mark Carney in previous interactions with Sheinbaum.

Given the significance of the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) and the upcoming discussions on its renewal, Simon underscored the necessity of maintaining strong bilateral relations with Mexico. She expressed optimism about the potential for collaboration between Canada and Mexico, especially regarding shared priorities and ongoing initiatives.

Notably, the meeting with President Sheinbaum coincided with a speech delivered by Prime Minister Carney at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, where he discussed the evolving dynamics of global power structures and the role of middle-power nations like Canada and Mexico.

Simon encouraged Canadians to read Carney’s comprehensive speech to gain insights into Canada’s strategic positioning in the current global landscape. In the near future, Simon is slated to travel to Nuuk, Greenland, alongside Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand to inaugurate a Canadian consulate and deliver a keynote address at a conference in Norway.
