“Flu Surge Strains Hospitals in Waterloo-Guelph Region”

Flu cases continue to be prevalent in the Waterloo region, Guelph, and Wellington County, prompting a surge in emergency department visits at local hospitals. Stephanie Pearsall, vice president of clinical programs and chief nursing executive at Cambridge Memorial Hospital, highlighted the unusually high activity this year, especially during the recent holiday period. She noted a consistent influx of patients in the emergency department, with projections indicating this trend will persist in the coming weeks.

According to the latest data from Public Health Ontario, the week of Dec. 28 to Jan. 3 saw 113 new influenza cases and 10 flu-related hospital admissions in Waterloo region. In comparison, Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health reported 88 new flu cases and 30 hospitalizations during the same period, without any recorded outbreaks.

Public health officials in the area have observed a significant uptick in flu cases in recent weeks, emphasizing the importance of preventive measures such as frequent handwashing, staying home when sick, and wearing masks in crowded places. Pearsall recommended getting a flu shot for those who haven’t already, noting its potential to alleviate symptoms and reduce illness severity.

Tricia Brown, director of emergency services at Waterloo Regional Health Network, echoed concerns about the rise in respiratory infections, partly attributed to delayed care seeking behavior over the holiday season. She emphasized the need for timely vaccinations, staying home when unwell, and utilizing available healthcare resources.

As hospitals grapple with heightened patient volumes, Pearsall acknowledged potential staffing challenges due to illness, urging visitors to exhibit patience and understanding amidst the demanding healthcare environment. With influenza A, COVID, and RSV cases on the radar, healthcare providers are working tirelessly to address the surge in medical needs and ensure optimal care delivery.
