Canada’s skeleton team has refuted claims made by American athlete Katie Uhlaender that their coach deliberately hindered her chances of participating in the Winter Olympic Games. The sport’s global governing body has initiated an investigation into the matter.
Athletes from various nations are vying for the remaining qualification points for the upcoming Milan Cortina Games, with the qualification period concluding this Sunday.
During a North American Cup race in Lake Placid, New York, Canada withdrew four out of six women, resulting in a reduced opportunity to earn Olympic qualification points in the competition, which Uhlaender ultimately won.
Uhlaender, a 41-year-old athlete ranked third among U.S. women and 20th overall globally, expressed disappointment over Canada’s decision, which she believes dashed her hopes of participating in her sixth Olympic Games. Denmark’s bobsled and skeleton federation head, Carsten P. Wulf, also criticized Canada for alleged Olympic qualification manipulation, stating that such behavior goes against the spirit of fair play.
The Times of London reported a phone conversation between Uhlaender and Canadian head coach Joe Cecchini before the race, where tensions arose over Cecchini’s decision-making. While Cecchini defended his actions as a means to safeguard Canadian rankings, Bobsleigh Canada Skeleton maintained that the athletes were withdrawn from the competition due to their well-being after challenging performances in earlier races.
The International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation’s Integrity Unit will investigate the situation, with Denmark’s federation formally submitting a complaint. World Cup results hold more significance in rankings than lower-tier competitions, with a victory in the World Cup worth 225 points compared to 90 points in the North American Cup.
Despite the controversy, BCS emphasized that their actions were in the best interest of the athletes and the sport’s integrity. As the Olympic Games draw near, the final composition of the women’s skeleton field will be determined by rankings, with only two countries allowed to enter three athletes, four countries with two athletes, and 11 countries with just one representative.
Various national skeleton coaches, including U.S. coach Andrew Blaser, have raised concerns about the incident, with the U.S. bobsled and skeleton federation emphasizing their commitment to fair play and awaiting the decision of the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation.
