Environment Canada has issued a yellow alert for Niagara and Haldimand-Norfolk due to anticipated high winds in the region, including Hamilton, Brantford, and Burlington. The yellow alert is the least severe of the three color-coded alerts issued by the weather agency, with orange and red indicating higher risks.
The alert was issued early Friday morning specifically for communities along the Lake Erie shoreline. Environment Canada forecasts winds reaching speeds of 90 km/h, potentially exceeding 100 km/h in some areas along the lake, starting in the morning and subsiding later in the day.
In addition to the high winds, the agency mentioned the likelihood of showers and thunderstorms moving into the region in the morning, followed by a cold front sweeping through in the afternoon. This cold front may bring another round of strong winds, with gusts reaching 90 km/h or more along the Lake Erie shore in Niagara.
Environment Canada cautioned residents about potential damage to roofs, fences, and trees, and the risk of property damage or injuries from flying debris. Meanwhile, Hamilton, Brantford, and Burlington are under a special weather statement for southern Ontario, warning of morning thunderstorms and wind gusts of 70 to 80 km/h.
