In a recent study published in the journal Nature Communications, scientists have confirmed Charles Darwin’s suspicions from over a century ago that the seemingly harmless Saxifraga candelabrum plant is actually carnivorous. This flowering plant, found in the rocky mountain crevices of southwestern China, uses sticky hairs to trap and consume unsuspecting insects.
University of Florida botanist Douglas Soltis, a co-author of the study, expressed his excitement about the discovery, imagining Darwin’s approval. The plant’s sticky hairs, which release a sweet substance attracting insects, have fascinated researchers for years. Darwin had initially observed insects stuck to European Saxifraga plants in 1875 but lacked the means to prove their carnivorous nature.
To validate the plant’s carnivorous behavior, researchers fed fruit flies enriched with a stable nitrogen isotope to observe the plant’s nutrient absorption process. The scarcity of nutrients in mountainous regions drives these plants to seek nitrogen from insects they capture.
Peter Ryser, a plant ecologist not involved in the study, suggests that carnivorous plants like Saxifraga candelabrum initially evolved sticky hairs to protect their seeds from insects and later utilized them to extract nutrients from captured insects. This evolutionary advantage allows the plant to secure nutrients without affecting larger pollinators.
The study implies that there may be more undiscovered carnivorous plants, potentially within the Saxifraga genus. A similar trapping mechanism was found in a plant at Cypress Provincial Park in British Columbia, indicating a broader presence of carnivorous plants than previously thought.
According to the UK’s Natural History Museum, there are over 630 known carnivorous plant species worldwide, each with unique hunting strategies. From Venus flytraps to pitcher plants, these plants exhibit diverse methods of capturing prey for nutrients. Darwin’s fascination with carnivorous plants stemmed from their extraordinary adaptations for survival, demonstrating nature’s ingenuity in obtaining essential nutrients.
