In a heartwarming tale from the Northwest Territories, a family’s pet dog, Denali, found herself in a precarious situation just a week before Christmas. Thanks to the aid of a visiting veterinarian and the support of the local community, Denali, a cherished bull mastiff, was able to recover from a dangerous mishap.
Trevor Beck, who was away at the time, recounted how his family discovered that Denali had ingested a significant amount of Apoquel, her prescribed allergy medication in treat form. Denali had managed to sneak 100 pills that were mistakenly left within her reach on a countertop, causing immediate concern for her well-being.
With no permanent veterinary clinic in their town of Hay River, Beck and his wife, Andrea, swiftly sought assistance by reaching out to Dr. Jenn McCracken from the Manning Veterinary Clinic in Manning, Alberta. Dr. McCracken, who occasionally provides services in Hay River, played a crucial role in guiding the family through the crisis.
Dr. McCracken highlighted the potential toxicity of the medication for Denali, emphasizing the fortunate circumstances that led to her survival. Denali had also consumed other food items that day, which likely helped dilute the impact of the pills. The RCMP further aided in the situation by administering medication to induce vomiting, ensuring that the Apoquel did not fully enter Denali’s system.
The quick response from the community, including Beck’s mother and Staff Sgt. Phil Unger from the Hay River RCMP, was instrumental in securing the necessary supplies and support for Denali’s recovery. Beck expressed immense gratitude for the collective effort that saved Denali, emphasizing the invaluable role of the community in coming together during a time of need.
