“Chinese Whistleblower Granted Asylum in U.S.”

In a recent development, a U.S. judge has approved the asylum request of Guan Heng, a Chinese whistleblower who exposed the existence of massive detention camps holding Uyghurs in Xinjiang. Guan, a YouTuber from Henan, China, took it upon himself to investigate after reading a 2020 BuzzFeed News report on the issue. He ventured into Xinjiang in October 2021, capturing footage of the hidden camps using a telephoto lens.

Following his documentation efforts, a chain of extraordinary events unfolded, leading Guan to flee China, travel to the U.S. via Ecuador and the Bahamas, and eventually seek asylum. Unfortunately, he was caught up in an Immigration Customs and Border (ICE) raid last summer. However, after a five-year ordeal, a U.S. judge has now granted him asylum.

Guan’s lawyer, Chen Chuangchuang, highlighted the compelling testimony provided by Guan to substantiate his asylum claim. Chen emphasized Guan’s motivation to take action after witnessing concerning activities during his travels in Xinjiang in 2019.

This significant development marks the culmination of Guan’s journey, from a concerned observer to a whistleblower seeking refuge in the United States.
