Canada’s job market stagnated in August, shedding 42,000 positions, according to Statistics Canada’s recent report. This drop was unexpected as economists had anticipated a fourth consecutive month of job growth since May. The unemployment rate remained unchanged at 6.4 percent during the same period.
The latest Labour Force Survey revealed a decline of 20,000 public sector jobs for the third straight month, while private sector employment remained relatively stable. Notably, the manufacturing sector experienced a boost, adding 22,000 jobs in August, contrasting with decreases in public administration, natural resources, and utilities.
CIBC’s chief economist, Andrew Grantham, highlighted the significance of the manufacturing sector’s employment increase in August. He noted that this aligns with other economic indicators, such as exports and monthly GDP, pointing towards a slowdown in the economy for the third quarter amid heightened uncertainty surrounding U.S. trade relations.
Quebec and Ontario were the most impacted regions, losing 19,000 and 18,000 jobs, respectively. Despite the soft job report, Bank of Montreal’s chief economist, Douglas Porter, stated that the results were not surprising given the previous strong job numbers.
Hourly wage growth in August saw a notable slowdown, reaching its lowest point in almost nine years at a two percent annualized rate, down from 2.8 percent in July and 3.3 percent in June.
These job market fluctuations come against the backdrop of ongoing trade tensions between Canada and the U.S. Last month, President Donald Trump imposed significant tariffs on Canadian products, prompting retaliatory measures from Canada. The Canadian government introduced a $7.5 billion economic relief program to support affected workers and businesses, in addition to previous tariff support initiatives.
Statistics Canada highlighted the challenges faced by industries reliant on U.S. exports, noting higher layoff rates within these sectors over the past year. Export trends indicate a gradual shift away from U.S. markets towards other regions, particularly Europe.
While Canada experienced a job market slowdown, the U.S. saw positive growth in August, with 162,000 new jobs added. Trump praised the job numbers and called for a possible interest rate cut by the Federal Reserve to further stimulate economic activity. On the other hand, Canadian economists anticipate the Bank of Canada to maintain its 2.25 percent policy rate for the rest of the year.
