“Blue Dot Fever: Rising Ticket Prices Impacting Concert Attendance”

Fans are noticing a trend dubbed “blue dot fever” among major musical acts, possibly due to the high cost of tickets. The term originates from the blue dots on Ticketmaster’s site, indicating unsold seats for upcoming concerts. Speculation is rife that this trend has contributed to show cancellations and even entire tour cancellations in extreme cases.

Popular artists like Post Malone, Meghan Trainor, and the Pussycat Dolls have recently axed shows or tours, with some attributing it to this phenomenon. According to Eric Alper, a music publicist, the root of the issue lies in the escalating ticket prices coupled with the financial strain on fans due to the rising cost of living.

Ticket prices for the top 100 global tours surged by 37% from 2019 to 2025, as per data from Pollstar, a renowned entertainment industry publication. Initially, fans were less bothered by the high prices post-COVID-19, driven by the eagerness to return to live events. However, with soaring prices for essentials like food and fuel, fans are becoming more selective in choosing which concerts to attend.

Veronica Avila shared that she opted for Post Malone’s Toronto show, sacrificing the opportunity to see other artists like Morgan Wallen or Chris Brown due to financial constraints. Avila, like many others, now attends only one concert annually due to the steep costs involved.

The trend of fans delaying ticket purchases until closer to the event in hopes of price reductions is emerging, potentially leaving numerous blue dots on seating maps. Despite SeatGeek reporting a rise in last-minute summer ticket orders, Ticketmaster contends that concerts are still selling well, with fewer than 1% of Live Nation’s shows canceled this year.

While concert cancellations are limited, resale companies like SeatGeek and StubHub note a shift in fans’ decision-making process regarding concert attendance. They observe a refinement in demand, with fans making more calculated choices about which concerts to support financially.

As ticket prices climb, fans’ expectations for elaborate concert experiences have also heightened. The cost of touring has spiked due to elaborate productions, leading to concerns about affordability for mid-sized artists. There are apprehensions that live music accessibility may diminish if ticket prices continue to soar, limiting opportunities for both artists and fans.

Amidst uncertainties surrounding the future of touring profitability, artists may explore diversifying revenue streams beyond live shows, such as leveraging TV or film placements and merchandise sales.
