“Australian Beef Competes with Canadian in Supermarkets”

Australian beef is being sold in Canadian supermarkets at lower prices compared to Canadian beef, raising concerns among some producers while offering an affordable option for consumers. Tyler Fulton, the president of the Canadian Cattle Association, mentioned that Australian beef has been available in the Canadian market for years but has recently gained more visibility, especially for steak cuts.

Fulton explained that the pricing disparity is influenced by several factors, including the grass-based production model in Australia, resulting in leaner beef with less marbling than Canadian-produced beef, which is preferred in Canada. Additionally, retailers may be using a “loss leader” strategy to promote Australian beef.

Since 2018, Australia has increased its access to the Canadian beef market through the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). While this benefits Canada in terms of access to markets like Japan and Vietnam, Fulton emphasized that imported beef, though meeting quality standards, does not match the quality of Canadian beef.

Consumer reactions were gathered from shoppers at Loblaws-owned stores in Regina, with some expressing concerns over the high prices of Canadian beef. Karen Novak mentioned adjusting her diet due to beef prices, considering beef a luxury item. On the other hand, Jordan Fieseler opts to buy beef in bulk from local producers instead of purchasing imported beef.

Loblaws responded to the situation by stating that North American cattle supply constraints and increased Australian beef production have led to pricing differences. They expressed commitment to supporting Canadian beef producers while offering customers choice and value.

Fulton remains optimistic about domestic growth opportunities for Canadian producers, emphasizing the importance of the Canadian consumer market. Despite challenges faced by the beef sector in the past, there has been recent growth in the Canadian beef cow herd, indicating positive prospects for the industry.
