“Snowmelt Surge Threatens Saskatoon River Activities”

Residents of Saskatoon who enjoy water activities like paddling, swimming, and rowing on the South Saskatchewan River are facing potential disruptions to their summer plans due to an unprecedented amount of snow melting in the Rocky Mountains. This significant snowmelt is expected to lead to increased water levels downstream, affecting recreational opportunities on the river.

David Ukrainetz, a seasoned rower with over 15 years of experience, emphasizes the importance of maintaining optimal river levels. He notes the challenges posed by extremes in water levels, such as the risks associated with high water flow and the inconveniences caused by low water levels, as experienced last year.

The current water level is considered ideal, striking a balance for water activities. However, the anticipated surge in water volume brings new concerns, particularly regarding safety for inexperienced individuals and personal watercraft users who may not adhere to safety regulations.

According to John Pomeroy, the director of the University of Saskatchewan’s Centre for Hydrology, the increased water flow is a result of extensive snowmelt in the Alberta mountains. Pomeroy highlights the unprecedented snowpack depths in some areas, exceeding four meters and providing substantial water equivalents as the snow melts.

The influx of water from the snowmelt has already begun entering Lake Diefenbaker, a reservoir that feeds into the South Saskatchewan River. The Water Security Agency of Saskatchewan reports a significant rise in water flow into the lake, with further increases expected in the coming weeks.

The Water Security Agency has announced an increase in water releases from Lake Diefenbaker to manage the rising water levels. Snowmelt typically contributes a significant portion of the water flow in the Saskatchewan River basin, leading to seasonal fluctuations in water levels.

Mike Steckhan, the senior captain of the Prairie Lily ferry, has witnessed the impact of changing water levels on river navigation. He advocates for raising the water levels to support safe navigation and operational efficiency for watercraft like the Prairie Lily.
