Air Canada Express Flight Attendants Vote on Strike

Flight attendants working on Air Canada Express flights are currently in the process of voting on whether to authorize a strike as negotiations between the Canadian Flight Attendant Union and Jazz Aviation have hit a standstill. The union, representing approximately 1,000 flight attendants, is seeking a strike mandate following nine months of unsuccessful talks and mediation services engagement.

The Canadian Flight Attendant Union emphasized the importance of a strong strike mandate to convey the gravity of unresolved issues to Jazz Aviation. In response, a spokesperson for Jazz Aviation affirmed the company’s commitment to achieving a mutually beneficial agreement without disrupting its operations. The company is now pursuing the appointment of a conciliation officer as discussions with the union have reached an impasse.

Key concerns for the union include wages, compensation for ground duties, and enhancements recognizing the job’s impact on members’ lives. The union stressed the need for fair recognition of Jazz flight attendants compared to their counterparts in other Canadian airlines. Additionally, the union seeks acknowledgment of its members as safety professionals for their roles in ensuring passenger well-being.

In light of safety incidents like the fatal Air Canada Express Flight AC8646 crash in March, the union underscored the critical nature of safety and fair working conditions for flight attendants. Voting on the strike mandate is set to conclude on Friday, with potential strike action looming for Air Canada Express flight attendants should the mandate be approved. This development follows recent strike actions by WestJet and Air Canada flight attendants, indicating ongoing labor challenges in the airline industry.
