“Indian Fish Meal Factory Linked to Global Environmental Crisis”

In 2020, a group of officials in Goa, India, visited a factory named United Marine Products to investigate its disposal methods for toxic wastewater. Local residents had long been raising concerns about the factory’s impact on the air quality and drinking water. The factory is involved in producing fish meal, a protein-rich substance used in feeding farmed fish, which is created by grinding and cooking wild-caught fish.

During the inspection, it was uncovered that the plant operators were illegally disposing of wastewater by drilling bore holes behind the plant. Subsequently, it was determined that these bore holes likely contaminated groundwater, leading to illnesses among villagers and livestock.

The plant owner denied any wrongdoing, while consumers of seafood in Canada might not realize their connection to such distant issues. Despite the distance, the fish meal from this Indian factory supplied Skretting, a prominent feed producer used by numerous Canadian fish farms for salmon and trout production.

The Outlaw Ocean Project, a news organization in Washington, D.C., conducted a comprehensive five-year investigation revealing various hidden costs associated with producing fish feed. These costs include the loss of traditional fishing jobs, prolonged exposure to chemicals, preventable worker fatalities, and violent protests triggered by the unpleasant odors emanating from fish meal plants.

These social and environmental consequences predominantly affect the poorer nations where the feed ingredients are sourced and processed, far removed from where the upscale seafood products are consumed.

Since 2022, more than half of the global seafood consumption has originated from fish farms rather than wild catches, with aquaculture emerging as the fastest-growing segment in global food production, valued at $444 billion. Most fish farms rely on fish meal and fish oil derived from wild fish caught in the oceans.

Canada boasts over 200 fish farms, with most using fish meal or fish oil sourced domestically from Pacific anchoveta, chub mackerel, herring, and other species. However, a significant portion of the fish meal used in Canada, especially by aquaculture farms, is imported from overseas, linking Canadian consumers to the hidden social and environmental costs associated with foreign production.

The article highlights the Outlaw Ocean Project’s investigation uncovering issues related to fish meal production in various countries, such as Gambia, Mauritania, India, Peru, and China, shedding light on food insecurity, unsustainable practices, and social unrest within the industry.

The investigation also delves into the challenges faced by the fish meal production fleet worldwide, showcasing non-compliance with transparency standards and the exploitation of overexploited fish species. Additionally, the article discusses the declining reliance on fish meal in aquaculture, with a shift towards incorporating alternative ingredients like insects, algae, and krill in fish feed formulations.

Despite efforts to reduce fish meal usage, the demand for fish meal continues to rise, as evidenced by an increase in usage by major salmon companies. The article raises concerns about pollution and unsustainable practices at Canadian fish meal and oil processing plants, emphasizing the broader repercussions on poorer nations that supply the fish meal consumed in Canada.
