“UK PM Apologizes for Controversial Ambassador Appointment”

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer revealed on Monday that officials from the foreign office did not disclose to him or other ministers that they had authorized former U.S. ambassador Peter Mandelson’s security clearance in January 2025, going against the advice of the U.K. Security Vetting agency.

Mandelson, aged 72, was dismissed in September 2025 following revelations about his extensive connections to the late U.S. sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Starmer has expressed regret for appointing Mandelson and faced calls for his resignation due to the controversial appointment despite Mandelson’s vetting failure.

Apologizing once more to Epstein’s victims, Starmer admitted that appointing Mandelson as the U.K.’s ambassador to the U.S. was a mistake and a lapse in judgment on his part. He acknowledged that Mandelson should have never been given the role.

Starmer informed lawmakers that he had tasked the security standards oversight group to investigate any security issues raised during Mandelson’s term as ambassador. He also criticized the lack of communication regarding Mandelson’s failed vetting clearance, stating that he would have made a different decision if he had been informed.

In response to the unfolding situation, the government disclosed that Mandelson had not passed a security vetting process conducted before assuming his position in February 2025. This revelation has intensified pressure on Starmer, whose popularity has waned since his significant victory for Labour in the 2024 national elections.

Following the discovery of the vetting failure last week, Starmer fired top foreign ministry official Olly Robbins. Critics have accused Starmer of dishonesty and incompetence, questioning the sustainability of his leadership. Despite growing scrutiny, no senior Labour figures have demanded his resignation.

Despite facing criticism, Starmer’s colleagues expressed support for his continued leadership, emphasizing the need for accountability and addressing the ongoing concerns. However, opposition leaders like Ed Davey and Kemi Badenoch have condemned Starmer’s handling of the situation, labeling it as a severe misjudgment and negligence.

The controversy surrounding Mandelson’s appointment and the subsequent fallout have sparked renewed doubts about Starmer’s leadership ahead of upcoming local elections, although the party has not faced internal calls for his departure. The ongoing saga has strained relationships with the U.S., disrespected Epstein’s victims, and compromised national security by appointing a flagged individual to a key diplomatic position.

Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy and Technology Minister Liz Kendall affirmed that Starmer would not have approved Mandelson’s appointment had he been aware of the vetting failure. The unfolding events have created a challenging situation for Starmer and the Labour party, raising questions about leadership and accountability.
