A man armed with an automatic weapon fatally shot six individuals in Kyiv, Ukraine, before barricading himself inside a supermarket with hostages. Police later killed the gunman after a standoff. Fourteen people sustained injuries and were hospitalized. The attacker, a 58-year-old individual of Russian origin, ignited a violent incident in the city center, an area typically unaffected by wartime activities due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the assailant’s background and mentioned that the shooter had previously resided in Donetsk, Ukraine. The tragic event unfolded near a residential building and a shopping center, causing panic among onlookers as bodies littered the street. Zelenskyy reported that the attacker killed multiple individuals, including a hostage, with one more fatality in the hospital.
The perpetrator, who had set fire to his apartment before the attack, was eventually subdued by Ukraine’s specialized police units when negotiations failed. The hostages comprised customers and staff of the supermarket. Despite attempts to reason with the gunman, law enforcement had to intervene due to the escalating situation. The gunman possessed a valid firearms license.
During the tense confrontation, a female negotiator made efforts to communicate with the assailant, urging him to release the hostages peacefully. The Security Service of Ukraine classified the incident as an act of terrorism. Residents in the Holosiivskyi district recognized the gunman, describing him as unassuming and solitary in his interactions with neighbors.
