Hollywood Legend Eva Marie Saint Dies at 102

Eva Marie Saint, a slender actress known for her roles in the acclaimed movies “On the Waterfront” and “North by Northwest,” has passed away at the age of 102 at her residence in Los Angeles. The news of her death was confirmed by her family representative, Jeff Sanderson.

Saint made a remarkable entry into Hollywood with her role as the love interest of Marlon Brando in “On the Waterfront,” for which she received an Academy Award. Her acceptance speech at the Oscars, where she humorously mentioned being close to giving birth, added to her memorable debut. Throughout her career, Saint displayed a strong sense of independence by turning down lucrative offers and prioritizing her family, welcoming her children Darrell and Laurette in subsequent years.

Despite her limited number of film appearances in the early years, Saint’s talent shone through in renowned productions like “North by Northwest.” She credited her husband, Jeffrey Hayden, for encouraging her to take on challenging roles, including the spy character opposite Cary Grant in the Hitchcock thriller.

Transitioning to television in the 1970s, Saint experienced a career resurgence in the 1980s with roles in popular series like “Moonlighting” and films such as “Nothing in Common.” She continued to captivate audiences in the 21st century with appearances in modern movies like “Superman Returns” and “Winter’s Tale,” showcasing her enduring versatility as an actress.

Married to Hayden for 65 years until his passing in 2016, Saint’s career spanned decades, leaving a lasting impact on the entertainment industry. Despite initial doubts about her stage name, Saint’s natural talent and dedication to her craft propelled her from a small town upbringing in New Jersey to a celebrated Hollywood career.

Remembered as an advocate for organized labor and a role model for union members, Eva Marie Saint’s legacy as a talented actress and dedicated professional will continue to inspire future generations in the entertainment industry.
