“Retired Toronto Librarian’s Death Sparks West Nile Virus Warning”

Brent Cehan, who had recently retired from a 36-year career at the Toronto Public Library, had plans to travel and enjoy time with loved ones. However, his aspirations were cut short when he became one of the nine Canadians who succumbed to West Nile virus last year.

Cehan’s sister, Andrea Carrie, shared that he celebrated his retirement by engaging in outdoor activities with friends in High Park, which ultimately led to his infection with the virus. Carrie hopes that by sharing Cehan’s story, Canadians will become more vigilant, take necessary precautions, and potentially prevent further tragedies.

Two months before his passing, Toronto Public Health issued a statement confirming the presence of West Nile virus in mosquitoes. The virus is transmitted to humans through infected mosquito bites after feeding on birds. Symptoms typically manifest within two to 15 days and can range from mild to severe flu-like symptoms, affecting about 20 percent of individuals.

In rare cases, the virus can impact the central nervous system, leading to serious complications that require immediate medical attention. Dr. Corby Fink, an assistant professor at the University of Manitoba, emphasized that there is no specific treatment or vaccine available for the virus, and individuals with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of severe illness.

Carrie recounted how her brother began experiencing symptoms such as chills, vomiting, and fatigue, which were initially mistaken for a summer flu. His condition rapidly deteriorated, leading to hospitalization and, ultimately, his passing due to West Nile encephalitis.

Statistics from last year indicated 281 clinical cases, 14 asymptomatic cases, and nine deaths related to West Nile virus in Canada. The virus can exhibit varying activity levels based on environmental factors such as weather, bird populations, and mosquito abundance.

To mitigate the risk of West Nile virus, public health agencies recommend wearing protective clothing, using approved insect repellents, and eliminating standing water where mosquitoes can breed. Canadians are urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions, particularly during peak mosquito activity times at dawn and dusk.

Carrie emphasized the importance of understanding the risks associated with disease-bearing mosquitoes, especially in urban areas, and hopes that by raising awareness, others can avoid similar tragedies.
