Fossilized eggshells believed to belong to some of the largest dinosaurs ever discovered have been unearthed in a surprisingly cool region far from the equator. Despite the immense size of these titanosaurs, they did not rely on brooding to keep their volleyball-sized eggs warm.
A recent study led by University of Calgary paleontologist Darla Zelenitsky, along with researchers from Japan and Argentina, delved into the microscopic details of the eggshells to unravel how titanosaurs managed to maintain the ideal incubation conditions for their eggs without direct heat from their bodies. The findings suggest that titanosaurs likely employed a similar incubation method as modern crocodiles, which entails burying their eggs in warm piles of decaying vegetation.
Titanosaurs, colossal herbivorous dinosaurs characterized by long necks and tails, weighed up to 75 tonnes and roamed on four legs, comparable in size to half of a blue whale. These giant creatures produced volleyball-sized fossil eggs known as Fusioolithus, typically found in warmer climates. However, in a surprising discovery, fragments of Fusioolithus eggshells were detected in the Chorrillo Formation at the southern tip of Argentina, dating back to the Late Cretaceous period.
The location where these eggshells were found, although currently altered, was once situated as far from the equator as Red Deer, Alta., experiencing a climate akin to present-day New York City. The region housed an abundant ecosystem, hosting various dinosaurs like the titanosaur Nullotitan glaciaris and the two-legged herbivore Isasicursor santacrucensis, alongside megaraptors, small birds, and a diverse array of other prehistoric creatures.
To ensure successful hatching, dinosaurs needed to maintain optimal egg warmth for extended periods. While smaller dinosaurs could brood their eggs like birds, titanosaurs had to resort to alternative methods due to their massive size. The study shed light on the adaptability of dinosaurs, showcasing how these colossal creatures managed to thrive and reproduce in challenging environments across different latitudes.
In a related study by Tsu-Ruei Yang, it was suggested that oviraptors used a combination of sunlight and body heat to incubate their eggs. Yang expressed no surprise at the nesting habits of titanosaurs in distant regions, attributing their success to their widespread distribution globally. Further research into the nesting strategies of titanosaurs throughout different periods could unveil more insights into their evolutionary adaptability.
