A U.S. House of Representatives panel, led by Republicans, has recommended that former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton be held in contempt of Congress. This recommendation comes as a result of their refusal to testify regarding their connections to Jeffrey Epstein, a deceased sex offender. The committee alleges that the Clintons’ lack of cooperation with the House Oversight Committee has impeded the investigation and suggests potential criminal charges.
Although the Clintons have expressed a willingness to cooperate with the committee, they have declined to appear in person, citing concerns that the investigation is politically motivated to shield President Donald Trump. The committee voted to hold Bill Clinton in contempt with a 34-8 vote and Hillary Clinton in contempt with a 28-15 vote, garnering unanimous support from all 25 Republicans present.
The House is expected to vote on referring the cases to the Justice Department for potential prosecution, requiring a simple majority in the Republican-majority House. Contempt of Congress carries penalties of up to a year in jail and $100,000 in fines. The committee-approved resolutions state that the Clintons’ prolonged refusal to comply with subpoenas has significantly disrupted the oversight probe without valid legal justification.
Bill Clinton had offered to testify under oath at his New York office, as reported by The New York Times, but the proposal was rejected by House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer, a Republican from Kentucky. It is noted that Trump and Epstein had a friendship in the past, but Trump claims to have severed ties before Epstein’s legal troubles. Bill Clinton has acknowledged flying on Epstein’s plane in the early 2000s and expressed regret over the association, maintaining ignorance of Epstein’s illicit activities.
