Julian de Guzman and Melissa Tancredi, who collectively amassed over 200 international appearances for Canada, have been selected for induction into the Canada Soccer Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2026.
De Guzman made history as the first Canadian to play in Spain’s La Liga. A former captain of the Canadian national team, he earned 89 caps from 2002 to 2016. Known for his technical prowess as a midfielder, de Guzman excelled in ball control and creating opportunities for his teammates.
Tancredi, a formidable forward, earned 125 caps for Canada from 2004 to 2017. She played crucial roles in significant matches for the Canadian women’s team, contributing to some of their most notable achievements.
Canada Soccer president Peter Augruso praised both de Guzman and Tancredi for not only their on-field accomplishments but also for their roles as inspirations and leaders within the soccer community. Their impact on Canadian soccer culture and their enduring legacies have been recognized through their induction into the Hall of Fame.
The formal recognition of de Guzman and Tancredi’s contributions will take place later this year during national team home matches.
De Guzman, who debuted for Canada at 20 during the 2002 Gold Cup, went on to captain the team 25 times and held the record for the most appearances by a Canadian male player. His career spanned multiple World Cup qualifying cycles under various Canadian managers and included standout performances in CONCACAF Gold Cups.
On the club front, de Guzman played for teams in France, Germany, Greece, Spain, Major League Soccer, and the North American Soccer League. His accolades included being named player of the year by both Canada Soccer and Deportivo La Coruna in 2008.
Tancredi, affectionately known as Tanc, represented Canada in 125 international matches, showcasing her scoring prowess with 27 goals and 15 assists. Her achievements extended to NCAA success at Notre Dame and multiple Olympic appearances, where she played pivotal roles in Canada’s qualification and performance.
After a brief hiatus to pursue a chiropractic degree, Tancredi returned to the field and continued to excel both internationally and at the club level. She remains an integral part of the Canadian women’s team and has been a valued member of Canada Soccer for the past eight years as a chiropractor.
The Canada Soccer Hall of Fame, which has honored numerous players, referees, officials, and builders, now includes de Guzman and Tancredi among its distinguished members.
